Sake Guide Listing Category: Sake Retail Shops
Umami Mart is a shop in Oakland, California, that imports high-quality barware and glassware from Japan, and is also a bottle shop dedicated to sake and Japanese beer.
[The Umami Mart Bottle System] is America’s first beer shop focusing solely on craft brews from Japan, it carries the largest selection of Japanese beers of any retailer in the United States. The Bottle System also features an expansive selection of sakes, which are specifically chosen by co-owner Yoko Kumano, a Certified Sake Specialist. Umami Mart calls its bottle shop a “System” because they’ve categorized and described each of their beers and sakes in a systematic way to help customers find the perfect brew.
Umami Mart also offers a monthly sake subscription club called [Sake Gumi]. Sake Gumi members receive two bottles of hand-picked sakes, food pairings suggestions, and special tasting notes every month. Members also get exclusive invitations to special tasting events and field trips.
Umami Mart originally sprouted into this world as a food + drink blog in 2007, with contributors from NYC, Tokyo, LA, San Francisco, São Paulo, London, and Copenhagen. The Oakland shop was established in 2012, but the [Umami Mart blog] lives on today, featuring recipes, food-and-drink based travel guides, events, and happenings related to Umami Mart.
