Example of a “Taru” barrel

Taru can have two meanings.

1) Taru can mean “Taru sake”, a kind of sake that is aged in a cedar barrel. This style of sake is fragrant and woody, smelling of cedar.

2) Taru (sometimes written “daru”) is also the word for a sake barrel. They come in different sizes and are often measured by the “to”. A “TO” is a measurement of volume equal to 18 liters. A one “to” barrel (Itto Daru) holds 18 liters. a four “to” barrel (Yonto Daru) holds 72 Liters. Wooden Taru Sake Barrels can be plain wood or wrapped in a decorative rush covering, often stamped with a brewery logo on the front.
