October 1st was designated by the Japanese sake industry as “World Sake Day” or in Japanese “Nihonshu no Hi” (pronounced: knee-hon-shu-no-hee). As sake rice is harvested in September, the month of October is usually when most breweries begin production. While sake brewing does not always begin exactly on October 1st, this day is sometimes the start of the fiscal year for a sake brewery. In any case, this day has been set aside to celebrate the start of the sake brewing season and as a day to honor, promote and raise awareness of sake. Often there are events and celebrations related to sake around the world on Oct 1st. Look for Sake Day events near you!
